128 - BreakPoint Clerk Card Scanning

BreakPoint supports the use of Clerk Scan Cards for identifying clerks for a variety of functions. The use of Clerk Scan Cards is an excellent method of quickly identifying Clerks and Managers for Clerk Logon, Clerk Authorization, and Manager Authorization.

A Clerk Scan Card is simply a card with a Bar Code Number and a Clerk Name. The Clerk Scan Card may be generated using any standard ten-digit UPC-A Bar Code printing software. Since BreakPoint supports a Clerk Secret Code of only six digits, the Clerk Scan Card must be generated as a ten-digit UPC-A type Bar Code Number with four lead-in zeros. In other words, if your Clerk Secret Code is 123456, then your Clerk Scan Card must have a 10-digit UPC-A Bar Code of the number 0000123456. The four lead-in zeros are essential to BreakPoint recognizing the Bar Code as a Clerk Scan Card and so they must be included.

To implement this feature, there are virtually no setups required. At any point that you would normally type your Clerk Secret Code and press ENTER, simply scan the Clerk Scan Card. BreakPoint will use the Clerk Scan Card entry just as if you had entered it manually.

BreakPoint will treat the Clerk Scan Card just like any other Bar Code Number. You may need to set the various System Flags to strip off the UPC Bar Code lead-in identifier codes and the trailing check digits, so that the Clerk Scan Card is read as you wish it to be read.

The Clerk Scan Card must include a 10-digit UPC-A type Bar Code with four lead-in zeros. No other Bar Code type will be recognized as a Clerk Scan Card. If you do not use the 10-digit UPC-A Bar Code with four lead-in zeros, the entry will be interpreted as a PLU Item entry.

The Global System Flags that may be of concern when setting up Clerk Scan Cards may include the following:
System Flag 24 - Retain PLU check digit on UPC-A.
System Flag 25 - Retain PLU lead-in code on UPC-A.
System Flag 290 - Retain UPC 7 Type lead-in code.
System Flag 301 - Drop lead-in code on 13-digit UPC bar codes.
System Flag 416 - Retain Type 4 UPC-A lead-in code.
System Flag 417 - Retain Type 4 UPC-A check digit.
Once you have BreakPoint configured correctly, you may use the Clerk Scan Card at any time that you would use your Clerk Code. For example, if you scan your Clerk Scan Card at any time that the NEXT ENTRY: prompt is present, BreakPoint will perform a Clerk Logon operation. You may also use a Clerk Scan Card at any time that BreakPoint is prompting for Clerk Authorization or Manager Authorization. Remember that the Clerk Scan Card you use must be for a Manager Level Clerk in order to perform Manager Authorizations.
