129 - BreakPoint Giveaway Promotion

The BreakPoint Giveaway Promotion is an extremely effective and somewhat unique retail promotional facility. This promotional strategy that has been used quite effectively by major grocery operations in the US and Canada.

The Giveaway feature enables any PLU Item to be marked as a Giveaway Item. This is effected by placing a purchase requirement dollar amount into a new PLU field which we call Giveaway Amount. The Giveaway Item will be automatically discounted from the sale at the time of subtotal if the customer purchase amount equals or exceeds the Giveaway Amount purchase requirement.

The BreakPoint Giveaway feature includes several options:

1. Any number of Giveaway Items can be set up with different levels of Giveaway Amount. For example, a giveaway at the $25. level purchase could include a free 1 Litre Milk or 1 Loaf of Bread while a giveaway at the $50. level purchase includes a free Polo Shirt and a giveaway at $200. includes a free camera or toaster.

2. Each sale transaction will be permitted only one Giveaway Item which will be the most valuable item available for the purchase level the customer has achieved.

3. It will be the responsibility of each customer to ensure that they have included the Giveaway Item in their purchase and that their total purchase has met the Giveaway Item purchase requirement. If they have not included the Giveaway Item in their purchase or have not met the purchase requirement, the item will not be discounted from their sale.

4. Any item or department may be excluded from the purchase amount used for the Giveaway. This will enable retailers to exclude such things as Photofinishing, Prescriptions, or Tobacco items from the purchase limit required for the Giveaway.

5. A flag option exists which also permits the retailer to exclude the Giveaway Item itself from the purchase amount used for the Giveaway. In other words, if a $50. camera is a Giveaway Item for a $200. purchase, the $50. value of the Giveaway Item can be included or excluded from the purchase amount used for the Giveaway, at the retailer's discretion. It is anticipated that in most cases, the value of the Giveaway Item will not be included in the Giveaway purchase requirement.

6. A special Giveaway Comment (up to four lines) can be entered and modified at any time that will enable the discount to be highlighted on the receipt. This is intended to enhance the visibility of the promotion and improve the value of the promotion for the retailer.

This promotional strategy may be substantially more attractive to the average retailer than the traditional frequent shopper program for the following reasons:

1. There is virtually no maintenance for the retailer. There are no customer information forms that must be filled out, there is no customer data to retain on file, there are no customer cards to be retrieved, swiped, scanned, or manually keyed at the time of sale, and there is no tracking of points to be performed. No signup, no maintenance, no mailbacks, no cashier delays, virtually no operating expense at all.

2. It is available to every customer. This includes out-of-towners, temporary residents, and local regulars. It includes economy buyers, bulk shoppers, and customers at every budget level. Everyone can participate and benefit from this strategy every time they shop.

3. It not only provides incentive for return shopping, but it encourages customers to purchase more dollars worth of product each time they visit.

4. It provides instant gratification to the customer. Customer surveys indicate they like getting their bonus immediately. We are dealing in a "here and now" era, people like instant gratification.

5. It permits the retailer to give away items of their own choosing. The selection of Giveaway Items can take into account special pricing received on some recent purchase, some overstocking of certain items that needs to be relieved, or perhaps according to some new product area that needs to be promoted to the public. Basically, the selection of Giveaway Items can be used to the advantage of the retailer according to a variety of strategies.

To implement the Giveaway, you must first enter the Minimum Purchase Requirement into the PLU Item. This can be done using the PLU Update Program of the ALT Programming Menu.
